  • Church of Our Savior on Spilled Blood

The Church of Our Savior on Spilled Blood is one of the most impressive churches in all of Russia. That being said the building is not really a church since it has never actually been used for worship services. Rather it was built to be a memorial. Regardless of whether or not it is technically a church it is a very impressive building that has become a major tourist attraction.

The Church of Our Savior on Spilled Blood is a church that was built in St Petersburg Russia to commemorate the assassination of Tsar Alexander II. The church is located on the exact spot at which a bomb was thrown into the Tsar's carriage killing him. Originally it was just supposed to be a temporary shrine but it soon grew into a more permanent structure and eventually the decision was made to build a full scale church on the site as a memorial. The church was paid for by the new Tsar Alexander III.

The design of the Church of Our Savior on Spilled Blood was intended from the start to differ from the other buildings found in St Petersburg. Despite being built in the late nineteenth century it was designed to resemble a seventeenth century church. This was done in large part to inspire a spirit of nationalism in the Russian people. Construction of the church began in 1883 but was not completed until 1907. The church took much longer and more money than planned to build but the results are quite spectacular.

The Church of Our Savior on Spilled Blood is known for the elaborate mosaics that cover the walls and ceilings. There are 7500 square meters of mosaics in the church which is believed to be more than any other church in the world. The scenes are of course mainly biblical and were painted by some of the top Russian artists of the age. It is these mosaics that make the church such a popular tourist attraction. Over the years the church has suffered damage on several occasions as the result of war, the Russian Revolution being the worst in that regard. Therefore there was a major restoration that began in 1970 and took twenty seven years to complete with the church reopening in 1997.

One of the oddities about the Church of Our Savior on Spilled Blood is that it has never been used as a full time church. Initially it was intended to be used only for memorial services. Following the restoration it has largely been used as a tourist attraction. The money raised from tourists going through the building actually goes to Saint Isaacs Cathedral who now manage the building. The church is one of the main tourist attractions in St Petersburg receiving many thousands of visitors every day.
